<Abstract>
Objective: The present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of self-compassion-focused therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy in reducing anxiety, depression, and self-criticism in women diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

Methods and Materials: This quasi-experimental study utilized a pretest-posttest control group design. A sample of 30 women with GAD was randomly assigned to two experimental groups and one control group. The experimental groups underwent ten 90-minute sessions of either cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) based on the Bourke protocol or compassion-focused therapy (CFT) following Gilbert’s protocol. Standardized instruments used included the Beck Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory-II, and Thompson’s Levels of Self-Criticism Scale. Data were analyzed using multivariate and repeated-measures ANCOVA.

Findings: The results indicated that both CBT and CFT significantly reduced levels of anxiety, depression, and self-criticism in participants. However, CBT was found to be more effective than CFT in improving these psychological symptoms. The statistical analyses confirmed significant differences among groups (p<0.05), with partial eta squared values reflecting moderate to strong effect sizes for the interventions.

Conclusion: These findings suggest that both CBT and CFT are effective interventions for reducing anxiety, depression, and self-criticism in women with GAD, though CBT demonstrates greater efficacy. Integrating both therapeutic approaches is recommended for mental health centers aiming to optimize outcomes in this population.

    <OtherAbstract Language="FA">

</OtherAbstract>
