Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to predict psychological well-being based on attachment styles and difficulties in emotion regulation while examining the mediating role of relational forgiveness among married women in Yazd.

Methods and Materials: This applied study employed a descriptive-correlational design using structural equation modeling and path analysis. The statistical population comprised all married women residing in Yazd, estimated at approximately 120,000 individuals. Based on the Krejcie and Morgan table, 384 participants were selected through multistage cluster sampling. Data were collected using the 18-item short form of Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Scale, the 18-item Collins and Read Adult Attachment Scale, the 16-item short form of the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale, and the 25-item Interpersonal Forgiveness Questionnaire. Pearson correlation analysis, structural equation modeling, path analysis, bootstrapping, and the Sobel test were performed using SPSS and AMOS.

Findings: The structural model demonstrated satisfactory fit (CMIN/DF=1.877, GFI=.94, IFI=.96, TLI=.95, CFI=.96, RMSEA=.05). Secure attachment positively predicted relational forgiveness (β=.269, p=.001) and psychological well-being (β=.297, p=.001). Avoidant attachment negatively predicted relational forgiveness (β=−.152, p=.020) and psychological well-being (β=−.283, p=.001). Difficulties in emotion regulation also negatively predicted relational forgiveness (β=−.235, p=.001) and psychological well-being (β=−.124, p=.026). Relational forgiveness positively predicted psychological well-being (β=.195, p=.004). The direct effects of anxious attachment on relational forgiveness and psychological well-being were nonsignificant. Sobel tests confirmed significant mediating effects of relational forgiveness in the associations of secure attachment (Z=2.47, p<.05), avoidant attachment (Z=−2.06, p<.05), and difficulties in emotion regulation (Z=−2.39, p<.05) with psychological well-being, whereas its mediating role for anxious attachment was nonsignificant (Z=.21, p>.05).

Conclusion: Secure attachment, more effective emotion regulation, and greater relational forgiveness are important correlates of psychological well-being among married women. Relational forgiveness partially explains how attachment and emotion-regulation processes are associated with psychological well-being, suggesting that strengthening attachment security, emotion-regulation skills, and forgiveness may be valuable targets for family counseling and psychological interventions.
