Abstract

Objective: Nowadays, the spread of computer games and their addiction is one of the main concerns of parents and professionals in the fields of education and health. Therefore, the aim of this study was to comparing the effectiveness of training control over computer game addiction and schema therapy on self-control in adolescents addicted to computer games.

Methods and Materials: This study was a semi-experimental with pretest, posttest and two month follow-up design with a control group. The population of the study was adolescent girls addicted to computer games who referred to education counseling centers of Mashhad city in the 2024-2025 academic years. The sample size was 45 people (three group of 15 people), who after reviewing the inclusion criteria were selected with using purposive sampling method. Data were collected with using the computer game questionnaire (Wang and Chang, 2002) and self-control questionnaire (Tangney et al., 2004). The first experimental group underwent 10 sessions of 45 minutes under training control over computer games addiction and the second experimental group 10 sessions of 45 minutes under schema therapy (two sessions per week) and during this time, the control group did not receive any intervention. Data were analyzed with methods of chi-square, analysis of variance with repeated measures and Bonferroni post hoc test in SPSS-26 software at a significant level of 0.05.

Findings: The findings showed that both methods of training control over computer games addiction and schema therapy increased self-control in adolescents addicted to computer games and the results were maintained at the follow-up stage (P<0.001). In addition, the difference between the methods of training control over computer games addiction and schema therapy in increasing self-control in adolescents addicted to computer games was not significant (P>0.05).

Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, health professionals and therapists can use both methods of training control over computer games addiction and schema therapy beside other therapy methods to improve characteristics such as self-control.
