Abstract

Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between emotional self-awareness and perceived social support with body image among students at Islamic Azad University, Rasht Branch.
Methods and Materials: This was a descriptive-correlational study using a quantitative approach. The statistical population included all students at Islamic Azad University, Rasht Branch, during the 2024–2025 academic year (approximately 17,700 individuals). Based on Cochran’s formula, a sample of 376 students was selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using the Body Image Questionnaire by McKinley & Hyde (1996), the Emotional Self-Awareness Questionnaire by Grant et al. (2002), and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support by Zimet et al. (1988). Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation and stepwise regression in SPSS version 26 and SMART PLS 3.
Findings: Inferential results indicated a significant positive correlation between both emotional self-awareness and perceived social support with body image (p < 0.05). Stepwise regression analysis revealed that both variables significantly predicted body image, and the T-statistic values for all paths exceeded 1.96, confirming the significance of the relationships at the 95% confidence level. The final model demonstrated a good fit.
Conclusion: The findings suggest that higher emotional self-awareness and greater perceived social support contribute to a more positive body image among university students. Therefore, educational and psychological interventions in this domain are recommended.
